Compost Heaps

The compost heaps are very important for the health of the garden.

There are 3 bays, each of which is large enough for a small tractor with a front loader to drive in and turn the contents.

Uncooked kitchen waste and green material from the garden is added throughout the year and every now and again some wood chip mixed in to maintain the C:N::10:1 balance.
In the summertime, the added cut grass, regularly brings the temperature up to 70 C, killing off weeds and seeds.
For the last few years, the local farmer has enriched the heaps with a front loader full of well-rotted cow manure. The material breaks  down over the course of many months.

Once matured the compost  is spread around the flower beds and vegetable patches with excellent results.
